London Power Tunnels project reaches major milestone

National Grid is celebrating the start of tunnelling for its £1bn flagship project to rewire and replace existing electricity cables in London.

The arrival of a tunnel boring machine (TBM), named Edith, at National Grid’s New Cross site marks a significant milestone for the London Power Tunnels (LPT) Scheme which will futureproof the capital’s electricity supply.

Work began in spring 2020, and is being delivered by a HOCHTIEF & J. Murphy & Sons Limited Joint Venture.
