Huge concrete viaducts ‘to blight east Manchester’ in cut-price Piccadilly rail plans

The government wants to build a high-speed station at Piccadilly above ground to save money. But local leaders say that would mean ‘severing’ communities, cost thousands of potential new jobs and would be incapable of expanding in the future.

14,000 potential new jobs would be lost due to the amount of land required to build it.

Under government’s existing proposal, HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd would rise up from underground on a viaduct at least nine metres high for a mile-long stretch between Ardwick and the new station.
