Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom is assessing ambitious plans for a £800m tram network connecting Kent and Essex which also includes a 1.2km immersed tunnel running beneath the River Thames.
The project aims to:
– Alleviate congestion on the Dartford Crossing
– Boost economic growth either side of the Thames
– Reduce carbon emissions
The project includes:
-Two core routes covering a distance of 30km
-1.2 km immersed tunnel running parallel to the Dartford Crossing
– Essex half connecting Canvey Island, Basildon, Purfleet-on-Thames and Tilbury.
– The southern half linking places such as Gravesend, Bluewater shopping centre and Ebbsfleet
